about

***UPDATE (10/2/20): both tracks on this single have been remastered. Enjoy!***

KNNLNRD (pronounced “Kinnelon Road”) is ambient/experimental piece that I began in late Spring 2020 after a long period of having not written any new music. It started as a more dance-y, upbeat loop, but in the midst of crafting an intro for the song, I realized I preferred the air-y, percussionless vibe that was happening over my original approach. Ambient music is the genre I listen to most, so the idea of exploring it for myself was both fun and exciting.

As I was doubling down on the atmospherics and the length of the song, the global protests ignited by George Floyd’s heinous murder erupted. Among those protests was one organized by and for Kinnelon, NJ residents.

Kinnelon happens to be my hometown.

The turnout for this march (which took place on June 7th, 2020) dominated the main stretch of Kinnelon Road. It was inspiring and impressive… *especially* for such a painfully white suburb. I never thought I’d see something like this where I grew up. That alone feels indicative of real transformation, but hopefully the frequency of the town's allyship is maintained (as one guest speaker advised).

Massive credit to *all* the great speakers from that day, but especially to the young organizers who spoke firsthand about their racist experiences in town – addressing the community’s entrenched flaws directly and unapologetically. They made me feel proud.

The heavily processed sample featured throughout the song (the universal chant of “NO JUSTICE! NO PEACE!”) is taken directly from the Kinnelon protest. I ripped the audio from a short video I recorded and inserted it into the Logic Pro X session I’d been working in. Even the cover art uses a photograph I took during the march that day.

I hope the results inspire positive action in you.

Any proceeds from this song will go to Black Lives Matter in perpetuity, but if you’re reading this on Friday, June 19th, 2020, please be aware that Bandcamp is donating its portion to the NAACP Legal Fund for this 24-hour period, so there’s even more incentive.

Thank you for your support.
